Contemporary Artist Alexey Klokov: Terra Incognita for Los Angeles

0

In early February Beverly Hills was thrilled by a great event: the famous Seyhoun Art Gallery located on Melrose Avenue became a perfect platform for a successful solo exhibition Terra Incognita by Russian Contemporary artist Alexey Klokov. His paintings already got international recognition and were featured at art platforms of Russia, Japan, Austria, the UK and the US. Famous politicians, businessmen and big names of show biz are among Alexey’s fans who keep his paintings in their home art collections.

There were total of ten art pieces presented for LA art lovers and critics. The collection was drawn together from all around the world. The portion of the exhibition was transported from the artist’s workshop in Moscow, Russia; some pieces were provided by Berenson Fine Art Gallery (Toronto,Ontario); the others came directly from I.B.Clark Gallery (New Hope, USA). Among the paintings presented at LA exhibition one could see the famous Autobiography Alexey is well known for. This piece is a symbol of the artist’s whole life path. The painting is unique in its style and composition, since it reflects the measured color of the background that supports a kind of writing in tongues. Many roman letters stand out as well as Cyrillic characters, but the meaning must become an intensely personal one in the face of no deciphering document. These elements are distinct from the base layers much like in the artist’s other paintings creating depth and focus. This interplay can be constructed as the creation of Alexey Klokov’s own artistic and philosophic language that the critics called dialectics in color.

The exhibition also presented the art pieces from the series Harmony of Two, Not, Awakening, and Reflection, as well as his abstract paintings. From the moment of its opening, the exhibition was visited and scored by a lot of guests. Based on the high interest in Alexey’s art, the organizers made a decision to prolong the exhibition that was initially planned to showcase on February 2-8th. You still have a chance to see it at the following address:  Seyhoun Art Gallery, 9007 Melrose Avenue, Beverly Hills, CA.

Art Basel’s ‘OVR: Pioneers’: Participating Galleries, Artists, and Highlights

0

Live from March 24 to March 27, and featuring 100 galleries from 25 countries and territories, ‘OVR: Pioneers’ will be dedicated to artists who have broken new grounds for example aesthetically, conceptually, or socio-politically. Participating galleries will present tightly curated solo or group exhibitions, showing up to eight works simultaneously.

Collectors will be able to discover near 800 exceptional works across diverse mediums and periods and explore virtual walkthroughs and other parallel programming presented by exhibitors. As Art Basel continues to enhance its digital platform, a new feature has been introduced to this edition that allows users to create and share collections of favorite artworks and viewing rooms.

Several galleries will present historical works that pushed the boundaries of Modern art, including early to mid-20th century paintings by Jean Fautrier, who initiated the ‘Art Informel’ movement, at Applicat-Prazan; Kukje Gallery’s presentation of ‘Conjunction’ paintings by Ha Chong-Hyun, a master of Dansaekhwa and an instrumental figure in defining Korean modernism; and works on paper by Sonia Delaunay-Terk, a leading artist of the pre-war Paris Avant-Garde, shown by Galerie Zlotowski. Ben Brown Fine Arts will feature works by Alighiero Boetti, a prominent member of the Arte Povera movement who forged his own unique explorations of time, space, and language, while Watanuki Ltd. / Toki-no-Wasuremono will focus on sculptures and mixed-media works by Nobuo Sekine, a member of Mono-ha and a crucial figure in post-war Japanese art. Bergamin & Gomide will focus on a solo presentation of Mira Schendel’s work creating a dialogue between her ‘Monotypes’, ‘Little Nothings’ and ‘Little Stubs’ series all created with rice paper.

‘OVR: Pioneers’ will also feature artists who are at the forefront of challenging urgent sociopolitical issues through their practices. Gagosian will exhibit ‘American Tapestry’ made from strips of decommissioned fire hoses by Theaster Gates, while Alison Jacques Gallery’s solo presentation, ‘Gordon Parks: The Heart, Not the Eye’ will span over 30 years of the artist’s remarkable career, encompassing visions of resistance, intimacy, and racial inequity. Hayv Kahraman’s new body of works, presented at Pilar Corrias, will examine the borders of selfhood in relation to the politics of the nation state, while Mendes Wood DM will dedicate its viewing room to Paulo Nazareth, whose work raises awareness around issues of immigration, globalization, and colonialism in his native Brazil and the Global South. Roberts Projects will showcase washboard assemblages by Betye Saar, and two ambitious works by Penny Siopis made nearly two decades apart will be featured by Stevenson. Artists working in new media and technology play a central role in ‘OVR: Pioneers’. Miao Ying’s ‘Pilgrimage into Walden XII – The Honor of Shepherds,’ presented by Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, is a live simulation software that takes place in a medieval fantasy land and features six artificial intelligence ‘Social Shepherds’ that guard the land and its citizens.

Altman Siegel will present both new and early works by Trevor Paglen, whose provocative oeuvre occupies the intersection of photography, artificial intelligence, and mass surveillance, while Lisson Gallery will show mixed-media works based on facial recognition by Tony Oursler. Hosfelt Gallery will present Alan Rath’s sculptures made with robotics and computer-generated video. Marianne Boesky Gallery will bring together works by Frank Stella that highlight the artist’s groundbreaking use of computer modeling and 3-D printing from the early 1990s to the present day. Early pioneers of media art will also be featured, including Gretchen Bender at Metro Pictures. Noah Horowitz, Director Americas, Art Basel commented: ‘Our galleries have deployed a wide range of creative approaches to the expansive theme of ‘Pioneers.’ This online-only event not only celebrates how artists have pushed the boundaries of artistic production in the modern period but also revisits this conversation in the context of the present moment through myriads of perspectives, geographies and mediums.

We look forward to sharing these journeys with our global audiences and are confident that there will be fascinating discoveries for even the most experienced collectors, as well as inspiring artistic experiences for patrons newly joining our digital channels.’ For the full gallery list, please visit artbasel.com/ovr. The Online Viewing Rooms will be available via the Art Basel website under artbasel.com/ovr, as well as on the Art Basel App for the most mobile-friendly experience.

The 8th Annual Calabasas Film Festival Opening Ceremony

After a year and a half of the pandemic rollercoaster, the Festival was finally back for an in-person celebration. The event started with the Opening Night party and the movie screenings that took place at the Edwards Grand Palace. I personally enjoyed watching The Many Saints of Newark directed by Alan Taylor. It is a must-see film prequel to David Chase’s groundbreaking, award-winning HBO drama series The Sopranos. Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities – and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into all-powerful mob boss Tony Soprano.

Other movies to watch included Mass (by Fran Kranz), The Guilty (by Antonie Fuqua), Living Years (by Brenda Gillis), Once Upon A Time in Queens (by Nick Davis), I Was There (by John Zilles) and many other.

DAVID HOCKNEY HAS GENEROUSLY DONATED TWO ART PIECES TO ANGEL ART THE ILLUSTRIOUS PROJECT ANGEL FOOD ART AUCTION

0

June 1, 2017

Angel Art, Los Angeles’ premier charitable contemporary art auction, returns to Hollywood on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at NeueHouse Hollywood, 6121 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, 90028. Now in its 21st year, Angel Art has raised over $10 million for Project Angel Food, helping to provide millions of meals for thousands of men, women and children facing life threatening illnesses. In these challenging times of uncertain health care and the ever changing national climate, Project Angel Food stands by the credo that “Food and Love as Medicine” is needed now, more than ever. The theme of Angel Art 2017 is ART=LOVE, and Alexandra Grant has created a limited edition neon work of art illuminating this theme.
The renowned artist and philanthropist, David Hockney, has contributed two pieces [see photo attached] to the auction, “Untitled No 14” iPad drawing printed on paper and “Untitled No. 23” iPad drawing printed in paper both from “The Yosemite Suite”, 2010. 100% of all the auction proceeds benefit Project Angel Food and
fund the meal program. Since Angel Art first appeared on the scene in 1990, many internationally established artists have created and presented works for auction. 2017 contributors include Charles Arnoldi, Chuck Close, Nancy Rubins, Kenny Scharf, Ed Ruscha, Jennifer Bartlett, Sterling Ruby, and Analia Saban. “We are honored by the generosity and creativity of this esteemed family of Angel Artists,” stated Michael Maloney, Event Chair. “Time and again, these amazing individuals have stepped up and contributed works from the heart to help Project Angel Food.”
David Hockney was born in England in 1937, attended the Royal College of Art, and now resides in Los Angeles. He is a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer and photographer. Following a visit to California, Hockney began a series of paintings involving pool scenes, rendered realistically within a vibrant palette, for which he is most recognized. He is an important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960’s, and is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th Century.
Over 50 artists have contributed this year with all live/silent lots available for viewing and bidding on Paddle8: www.paddle8.com/auction/angel-art. Event tickets are $150 per person and $500 for VIP tickets (includes reserved seating, art auction program recognition, preview entry and Angel Art gift) and available at www.angelfood.org/angelart.
Richard Ayoub, Executive Director of Project Angel Food said, “Our organization needs over $10,000 each day to continue providing meals, and all proceeds from Angel Art directly fund the meal program. We are especially grateful to City National Bank for their support this year.”
Project Angel Food has served the community tirelessly for over twenty eight years, providing more than 10.5 million meals to those living with critical illness. The kitchen and staff prepare over 11,000 meals a week free of charge, and medically tailored to the requirements of clients living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, kidney failure, congestive heart disease and diabetes. The mission is one of love, to feed and nourish the sick as they fight their battle. Many of these clients are living well below the poverty line and Project Angel Food is the lifeline, filling a desperate need in all communities. The client base is testimony to this fact, 40% Latino, 30% African-American, 21% Caucasian, 5% Asian and 4% other.

Thousands Celebrate Vanderpump’s 5th Annual World Dog Day

August 16, 2021, Los Angeles, CA

On Saturday, August 7, 2021, Lisa Vanderpump, her husband, Ken Todd, and The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, hosted the fifth annual “World Dog Day” in West Hollywood, California. The outdoor, socially distanced event, co-sponsored by The City of West Hollywood, focused on the celebration of dogs, as well as raising awareness about dog abuse and mistreatment, both domestically and globally. Over a thousand people and their dogs were in attendance to join in on the festivities. This included over 20 pet-centered vendors, celebrities, live entertainment, and a doggy fashion show.

Founder of The Vanderpump Dog Foundation, Lisa Vanderpump, welcomed the attendees to the event, reflecting on The Foundation’s work since its inception in 2016 and how COVID-19 has impacted dog rescue efforts. “The past year has been extremely difficult for everyone, and keeping a Foundation alive throughout COVID-19 has had its unique challenges. However, we really feel that 2020 brought a new-found love and understanding for our furry friends to many people, providing love and support through these difficult times. It is such an incredible feeling to be able to finally come together and celebrate these animals, in our first event in over a year and a half. Through the efforts of our Foundation, we have now rescued and re-homed over 2,300 dogs domestically,” said Lisa Vanderpump.

Stars of Bravo’s “Vanderpump Rules,” Lala Kent and Raquel Leviss, alongside Dr. Evan Antin, People Magazine’s Sexiest Vet, served as hosts of the “Vanderpump Dogs Fashion Show” that crowned Vanderpump Rescue “Gabby” as the winner. Additionally, rescue “Diana” was named as The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s “Dog Of The Year” after months of surgery and recovery from horrific wounds. Diana is now up for adoption at The Vanderpump Dog Foundation on 3rd Street in Los Angeles.
